Western Water Constructors, a Santa Rosa-based engineering and construction firm, contracted Advanced Marine to provide underwater support services for a multi-million dollar City of San Francisco water treatment plant re-construction project. Western Water needed to de-water the plant’s outfall into Islais Creek for the re-construction of stop logs at various locations between the plant and the outfall.
In 2017-2018, Advanced Marine divers removed the existing deteriorated steel trash racks, prepared the outer concrete face to accept the sealing surface of the temporary flat patches, drilled and installed mechanical anchors, assisted with the design and build of the flat patches, and installed the patches. To meet the Western Water project schedule, Advanced Marine was required to mobilize on three occasions over a span of several months. Each time, Advanced Marine divers installed the patches. The following day, Western Water pumped the water from the upstream side of the outlet to complete their work. Advanced Marine removed the patches the next day and demobilized.
In 2020, Western Water contracted with Advanced Marine to design, build and install permanently installed stainless steel slide gates on the Islais Creek outfall. After the slide gate fabrication was completed, Advanced Marine mobilized a fourth time and installed the gates over a three-day outage work window.
“It was a pleasure working with Western Water”, said Advanced Marine’s president, John Shaw. “Our part was a relatively simple component of a much larger, more complex project. Working successfully within a narrow plant outage window, the project management and scheduling communication was excellent. The teamwork on the ground between our people and the Western Water crew made the process safe and efficient.”
